5 Things to Complete When Moving into a New House

Just got a new home? When moving remember that there are some important tasks you need to take care of before moving in and unpacking.

Moving into a new house can be stressful whether you’re a family of one or a family of ten. With the right strategies and mindset, however, you can make moving into a new home much smoother and less overwhelming. To make sure your move into your new house goes smoothly, here are some things to consider:

Walk around your new place

At first, it is essential to do a complete walkthrough of the house before you move in. Please ensure you’re familiar with the house’s layout and features. Check for any damages and take notes if needed. Please make sure all systems are in working order and everything looks as it should. Check the heating and cooling systems, make sure the plumbing is in good condition. All that will help you and the landlord if anything needs to be fixed.

If you spot an issue, contact your landlord to tell them about the problem. Whatever is not mentioned in your contract will be your responsibility.

Water and Electricity

First, take the time to locate the water valve and fuse box. That will ensure you have control over your water and electricity supply in an emergency case. Having this information ready beforehand will make your move much easier.

Fuse box can be found in the building’s basement, garage, or laundry area.

The water valve is most likely located somewhere along the perimeter.

Handle the Basics

Ensure that home is prepared for you to move in. All your utility services, like electricity, water, internet, gas, etc., should be transferred into the new house, ideally before you move in. Sign new contracts if you cannot transfer services, and remember to cancel previous ones.

Before moving in, ensure all the basic tasks are taken care of. This includes turning on the utilities and making sure all appliances are in working condition.

Clean New Home

Best if you clean your new home before moving in with all your belongings. Getting rid of hidden dust and dirt in an empty place is much easier. It does not matter whether you will hire a professional service or do it yourself. If you do it yourself, make sure that you have cleaning materials or that you can buy them in your new area.

If you have already moved your belongings to a new place, perform cleaning immediately. That would be a better solution because none of your furniture is in the way. Now it’s time to reposition your items where they belong and relax.

Prepare for Pets & Kids

One more important thing is to make your new home safe for kids and pet friendly. Ensure there is no open access to potentially harmful and dangerous items or places. Here are some improvements that would help to increase the safety of your household:

  • Kids-protected electricity outlets.
  • All sharp corners are to be covered.
  • Knives, flammables, and tools are kept away from children’s reach.
  • Window guards, to prevent opening them.
  • Build-in doors for pets.

Locks to be Changed

Once you have moved in, changing all the locks on your doors and windows is important. This will ensure that your home is safe and secure. You better always change the locks after moving into a new house for security and peace of mind. This is standard practice for most new homeowners, so don’t forget!

Replace Air Filters

You cannot be sure how long the current air filter was in use. That’s why replacing the air filter is essential as well. The air filters in your new home should be replaced every three months for optimal air quality. Replacing filters regularly will also help extend your HVAC system’s life. Additionally, replacing the air filters will help keep the air in your house clean and healthy.
